Wu-Tang Clan Release Boots and Tour Dates

Info on New Footwear From Fila and Shows in Support of 8 Diagrams

Nov 18, 2008 Matthew Whelihan

Already well known for their creative marketing skills and diverse range of merchandise, Wu-Tang Clan add boots to their list of products.

Since their inception Wu-Tang Clan have always been clever businessmen. Even without a record deal they turned a profit by selling CDs out of the back of cars and played packed shows mostly due to word of mouth. Wu-Wear, the Staten Island rappers' clothing line, may also be the first of its kind created by a rapper or rappers.

Weathertech Boot by Fila

Over the years The Wu-Tang Clan have sold books, video games, sneakers, and even action figures with their names on them. Last year saw their first foray into footwear with the Fila C.R.E.A.M. Sneaker named after the classic song of the same name from their debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Now Fila is offering Wu-Tang Weathertech Boots. The boots, which carry a $100 price tag, are available in three colors: black, navy, and grey and feature the Wu "W" on the side and back.

8 Diagrams

Wu-Tang clan took some time off from their merchandising last year to record their fifth album, the excellent 8 Diagrams. Although much of the record was steeped in animosity - it was rumored Wu members Raekwon and Ghostface Killah were not happy with the direction producer and mastermind Rza had gone with his beats - the album was the best work their group had done in years. While the gritty urban hum and kung-fu aesthetic were still in full effect, Rza also added some tricks to his bag by employing sci-fi paranoia and a knowledge of restraint. Some critics called it "psychedelic," but more than anything it was unafraid of following multiple muses.

The music alone didn't make the album however, as big names and b-list Wu members alike showed that their legendary status is based off of their sound and their skill. Method Man turned in his best verses in years, while the supposedly upset Raekwon and Ghostface sounded anything but on their hard-hitting bars. It was a return to form in some ways, showing that Wu-Tang hadn't gone soft yet.

Wu-Tang on Tour

8 Diagrams may have dropped last year, but Wu-Tang is just getting around to touring in support of it now. The veteran hip-hop act will be hitting much of the country starting at the end of November and going into January. As usual though its unclear just which members will be on the tour, especially after the controversy surrounding 8 Diagrams.
