The Roots new single "How I Got Over" is from their upcoming ninth album and features new lyrical material from rapper BlackThought and beats from drummer Questlove.

How I Got Over is the ninth studio album released by the South Philly rap band since 1993. The October 2009 release is set to take fans back to the days of BBC recordings and classic rock albums. How I Got Over will be recorded live in studio, with no dubbing, effects, secondary tracks or vocals and pure performance power. With live vocals from BlackThough and drum beats from Questlove, fans of the Roots are poised for a slightly different sound than Rising Down or Game Theory.

How I Got Over

The latest album from The Roots follows on the heels of their successful 2008 release Rising Down, and features band members BlackThough, Questlove, F. Knuckles, Owen Biddle, Kirk Douglas and Kamal Gray.

The album, according to Questlove, will be a positive album by The Roots standards. It is set to reflect the relief felt by BlackThought and the group in his lyrics over the passing of the Bush administration.

The Roots first single on the album, “How I Got Over,” was debuted on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The band has been the house band for Fallon since the show began in 2009, and Questlove has used the outlet to expand his live repertoire and the fan base for The Roots

The single “How I Got Over” features only one verse from BlackThought with a prominent instrumental track and a sung hook from long-time collaborator and friend of The Roots Dice Raw.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon influence

Because of their stint Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the band has found themselves honing their live performances nightly in front of a national audience. This experience has prompted them to record their entire album live in studio.

After rehearsals, the band will be playing their original songs live, along with samples from past rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll hits. The live sound that has worked so well for The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon has Questlove confident in their sound.

Features on How I Got Over

The album is set to include many guest collaborators and performers, as did their previous album Rising Down. Aside from Dice Raw on “How I Got Over,” the album will also give a spotlight to Young Chris, Beanie Siegel, Phonte, Pharoahe Monch and others.

Among the other, Chrisette Michelle was featured with The Roots on Rising Down’s “Rising Up.” Also appearing with The Roots for the second time on How I Got Over is Cody ChestnuTT, who appeared on the band’s “The Seed 2.0.”
