Rev. Run's Best Selling BookTake Back Your Family Reaches # 15 On NY Times List
Though their MTV show Runs House, Rev. Run and Justine Simmons have become one of America's favorite families. Now, they are sharing their gifts with the world.
Between their wonderfully loving children and success as business people, it seemed things couldn’t get any better for Rev. Run and his wife Justine Simmons. But they have just scored another point for their team with their book, Take Back Your Family (Penguin Group, ISBN: 0143143549), as it has just entered the NY Times Best Seller List. Co-written by the Simmons’, the book offers parenting advice based on the same basics they apply to their own family. It entered the best selling Hardcover Advice list this week at number 15. According to the Reverend himself, the book is the literary version of the message he delivers on his MTV reality show Run’s House. “My whole show is a ministry,” the Reverend said in an interview with AllHipHop.com. “I don’t have a church that I’m the pastor of. So in my mind, I’m a very untraditional reverend. And my pulpit just happens to be MTV, which is a very different type of congregation.” Released in book stores earlier this month (August 2008), the book includes lessons like “Run your family as the CEOs: Chief Officers of Everything; Lead by example, not by preaching” and “When they get older it’s not the time to back out, it’s time to push further in their life.” The latter of the two has become especially important to Run as he eldest daughter, Vanessa, recently turned 25. “That’s a time when they need mentoring the most, and they need love the most when they get older,” Run said. “Some parents might think it’s time to cut the strings, I think it’s time to get closer. These are when they’re making the biggest decisions of their life.” How Run's House Fame Affects The FamilyAccording to Run, most of the feedback they get from the show and current book tour has been positive. But with all that is going on, the family (especially the girls) have been the subject of intense media scrutiny. “People are showing me blog things, and I’m like what do you want me to look at,” Run said about some of the negative stories on his family. “There’s nothing to see. What is she not supposed to talk to guys? There’s nothing I can do but let guys be guys, let girls be girls; let JoJo put his album out, and [let them] live their life. That’s all I can do is raise them the best I can, and watch them operate in this world without cramping their style… I’ve been blessed with kids that are smart, and they’re not followers, they’re leaders. They’re not really caught up in the whole game like that. They move around. They’re basically good kids. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but I did the best I could and I do the best I can.” Take Back Your Family is on sale now in finer bookstores nationwide.
