Rapper songs and new rap music artist Flo Rida find inspiration from decades ago as fans flock to the classic beat, melodies and catchy lyrics.
Right Round debuted as a new hip hop rap music single about a year after Flo Rida’s song Low, featuring T-Pain, smashed the Singles chart for 10 consecutive weeks. The rapper found himself riding the top again with Billboard.biz reporting Right Round being downloaded about 636,000 times. Hot Rap Songs Become Best Rap Music, to Rapper 50 Cent. The single topped Flo Rida’s own record for Low which was purchased 467,000 times in a seven-day period. This record beats a former record-holding single, Crack a Bottle, from Eminem, Dr. Dre and rapper 50 Cent, a track that pull in 418,000 downloads. Flo Rida is Tramar Dillard who takes his name from his home state. Born in 1979, Flo Rida is the only boy among seven sisters. As a teen, he toured with a local rap group, 2 Live Crew, and later appeared on numerous studio albums. He also collaborated with many other well-known artists in the hip-hop industry, such as Rick Ross, Birdman, Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Yung Joc, Trina, Brisco, and Akon Flo Rida’s success has included guest performances on R&B and pop singles, including We Break the Dawn by Michelle Williams, the remix of 4 Minutes by Madonna and Running Back by Australian R&B singer Jessica Mauboy. His new fame also resulted in live performance during the summer of 2008 on the Fox dance competition program So You Think You Can Dance in the US and 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards in Canada. Low appeared on his solo debut album and the track was number one for 10 weeks in early 2008. The single became an anthem for the preteen crowd with its simplistic rap roots style and one-word verse that brings listeners together in song. Rapper Songs Straight, New Rap Music Straight from 80’s HIts MusicRight Round finds its commercial success in a wider audience, largely owing to its use of 80’s music. It samples new wave artist Dead Or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), a song featured by many other musicians, including Jessica Simpson, Ten Masked Men and Blind Passengers. The track was also released on the dance-moves Wii game Dance Dance Revolution and is a mainstay in the game’s arcade version. You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) was also a song that was number one in its own era, and had a late-’90s resurgence thanks to movie The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and Sandler’s movie You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. Flo Rida’s sprinkling of 80’s music is not a new musical device. Rihanna builds new wave and 80’s hooks into several of her smash hits. Don’t Stop The Music borrows from Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Startin’ Something. Her Shut Up and Drive song takes its influence from New Order’s Blue Monday. Meanwhile, SOS borrows from Soft Cell’s Tainted Love. Well-tuned listeners immediately recognize Kid Rock’s combination of Warren Zevon’s Werewolves of London and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama to create All Summer Long, one of the biggest hits of 2008. Fans are drawn to riffs and catchy lyrics that span generations and when reworked by contemporary artists in rap music, such as Flo Rida with Right Round, turn solid gold.
