Kanye West's Video Music Awards OutburstTimeline of the Rap Stars' Tantrums and Shock Inducing Behavior
Chicago born rapper, producer, author, and singer, Kanye West, is no stranger to public pandemonium.
Among the most recent of his communal tantrums is the MTV Video Music Awards that aired Sunday, September 13, 2009. A night that was centered around remembering the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, turned into a full fledged politically incorrect tirade when Taylor Swift was swiftly interrupted by West. He took the microphone from her and proclaimed, among jeers and cheers, from the audience, “Hey Taylor, I'm really happy for you, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time." The nineteen-year-old country pop star stood their appearing humiliated in front of a crowd that gave her a standing ovation and Beyoncé later gave Swift her moment to shine. West, later, posted a public apology on his blog stating, “That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry." However, this is not the first time Kanye West has exhibited such disrespectful behavior. 2007 VMA'sIn 2007, again at the MTV Video Music Awards, he questioned MTV about why he was not performing on the main stage when Justin Timberlake was allowed to. In addition, he exhibited poor sportsmanship with his alleged quote of, “That's two years in a row, man...,” in reference to his losing in all five categories that he was nominated for, and claiming that he would, “never return to MTV.” Rolling Stone MagazineIn 2006, West appeared on the cover of the popular music related magazine, Rolling Stone, donning a crown of thorns in the image of Jesus. Later that year, he rushed the stage, in the middle of yet another acceptance speech, at the MTV Europe Music Awards, arguing that he should have won the award instead of Justice and Simian. His argument included claims that his video, “cost a million dollars and Pamela Anderson was in it." 2005 Grammy AwardsOn February 13, 2005 at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, West appears wearing angel wings during his resurrection inspired performance. After receiving the award for Best Rap Album for College Dropout, West induces a super arrogant speech that concludes with, “A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn't win anything ... I guess we'll never know.” 2004 AMA'sIn 2004, at the 32nd American Music Awards, West stormed out of the show in protest when he lost the Best New Artist award to yet another country singer, Gretchen Wilson. In a later interview with reporters, he discusses a possible "conspiracy" against him and states, “...I was the best new artist this year.” His outrageous and erratic behavior, since he stepped into the music scene with his album debut, College Dropout, in 2004, has been linked to many ideas including racism, a less than adequate childhood, publicity stunts, and pure immaturity. The actual reasoning remains unknown.
