From movies riddled with sadistic violence to those who mix humor with horror, here is a list of the best scary movies to rent on DVD this Halloween.

Halloween is October 31. With the most ghoulish day of the year approaching, horror movies are flying off the shelves. This is the only time of year when customers can go to the check out with hands full of scary classics and not be looked at as a weirdo. From the classics like Frankenstein to newer releases like Dawn of the Dead, the screams from some of cinema’s scariest movies can be heard from TV sets across the nation. Looking for something scary to watch? Well curl up with a blanket, break out the popcorn and check out these macabre movies!

Halloween II, Rating: R, Production Year: 1981, Running Time: 93 minutes

Cast: Donald Pleasence, Lance Guest, Jeffrey Kramer

In this sequel to the wildly popular original film, Halloween, Michael Myers is on the loose again, but this time he has taken his murderous antics to Haddonfield Hospital. His intended target, his sister, is in the hospital being treated for wounds inflicted by Michael so he slices and dices his way through the entire staff to get to her.

Jason Goes To Hell, Rating: NR, Production Year: 1993, Running Time: 88 minutes

Cast: Allison Smith, Erin Gray, Kari Keegan

The infamously evil Jason Voorhees is back (for what was supposed to be the last time). After being tracked down in the woods and set up by a special FBI task force, the “ha-ha-chi-chi” killer is riddled with bullets and presumed dead. Much to everyone’s surprise, he is anything but. He is reborn (in a graphic scene where the coroner eats his heart) with the bone chilling ability to assume the identity of anyone he comes into contact with.

American Werewolf In London, Rating: R, Production Year: 1981

Cast: Jenny Agutter, John Woodvine, David Naughton

While “backpacking” through the English moors on vacation, two American college students stumble upon a quaint little pub with some strange patrons who warn them not to leave the road when walking at night. The pair decide against heeding the good advice and the next thing David knows he is waking up in a hospital with a bite wound on his shoulder. Jack, his friend, arrives at the hospital but something is amiss because he is dead and decomposing. Jack tells David that if he does not kill himself he is going to turn into a werewolf when the moon is full. David brushes the encounter off as a hallucination but quickly realizes his friend was right! Accented with plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor, this movie is the perfect mix of horror and hilarious.

Devil’s Rejects, Rating; R, Release Date: July 22, 2005, Running Time: 101 minutes

Cast: Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Sheri Moon, Karen Black, Irwin Keyes

The sequel to Rob Zombie’s film debut House of 1000 Corpses, centers on around a group of bounty hunters led by Sheriff Wydell’s brother when he finds out his father was slain by the Firefly family. Filled with shocking rape scenes, decapitations, mutilations, sadistic violence and drug use, this movie is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, one of the best modern horror movies to grace the silver screen in years.

Whether you looking to be completely scared or laugh at the absurdity of the plots, there is always something for everyone in a horror film. Looking for more thrills and chills? Check horror classics such as “Creepshow,” “Creepshow 2,” “Cujo,” “Jaws 3,” “Freddy Vs. Jason,” “Exorcist,” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
